Parallel session 1: Exchange of good practices for training research supervisors

Description: Research supervisors have the unique potential to leverage research quality and integrity. Yet what are examples of good practices for training supervisors? And what are the challenges and opportunities when solidifying and scaling up training initiatives?

With this SIG, we hope to start a community of practice consisting of researchers, trainers, policymakers and other stakeholders tasked with supervision and leadership for research quality and integrity.

This interactive session is kick-started by Dr Sonja Bjelobaba, who will discuss the BRIDGE project that developed educational modules and checklists for supervisors. After a brief Q&A, we will then continue further discussion on challenges and opportunities in separate break-out rooms. The session is closed by collectively prioritising the topics that we, as a community, want to focus on.


Parallel session 2: The impact of using Generative AI on researchers’ behaviour and cognition

Description: The use of Generative AI in research will impact researchers’ interaction with other researchers as well as their engagement with research subjects and the wider society. These changes need to be monitored and reflected upon to ensure that they are not interfering with DEI and research integrity principles. By exploring the impact of using generative AI on researchers’ behaviour and cognition, we can develop recommendations and policy advice for universities as well as create training materials for researchers to minimize the likelihood of flouting DEI and research integrity principles. development and implementation and research integrity need more specific attention to DEI. 

Parallel session 3: Evaluation of RCR education

Description: Evaluation of Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) education is crucial if we want to understand whether people who attend RCR education actually improve their behaviour and become more responsible researchers. How can this type of education be evaluated?

In this interactive workshop, we will first share insights in recent developments in the field of research on RCR education and its evaluation, presenting the first results of our review on RCR evaluation, showing an overview of existing evaluation tools for RCR education (the study protocol is published on OSF: https://osf.io/pzasv). Second, we will present some examples of RCR course evaluations.

In the third part of the workshop, we will all share insights and experiences on evaluation of RCR education. What tools are used by participants? What tools do we need to better evaluate RCR education? And, what should be the focus of evaluation? 

The workshop will be concluded by setting the agenda for future meetings for our SIG group: what are our needs and wishes for the future?

Welcome to "Navigating Open Science with NERQ_OS," a dynamic 90-minute workshop designed to engage participants in creating an educational map for tailored training in open science. This session directly responds to the objective suggested in May 2023 to foster a collaborative approach to open science education.

The workshop is structured around a three-step process, using a target group definition as a foundation for a learning material exchange platform:

Step 1: We'll introduce the different target groups of open science sourced from the report "Digital Skills for FAIR and Open Science" by the EOSC Executive Board Skills and Training Working Group. This serves as a structure for our learning material exchange platform.
Step 2: Participants will then engage in a collective effort to gather learning materials for each target group outlined in the graphic. This interactive exercise will highlight the diversity of resources available and the need for targeted educational content for different groups.
Step 3: The final step involves ideas on publication and how to reach others to fill up the learning materials required to complete all groups. This highlights the importance of collaboration and shared knowledge in advancing open science practices.

Open Science is a joint endeavour that can only be achieved when many groups engage. Creating an educational map for tailored training aims to provide an accessible overview of educational materials and foster a collaborative approach to open science education.

Join Julia Priess-Buchheit and Flavio Azevedo, leaders of the SIG Group Open Science, for this engaging and interactive workshop. Together, we can advance the cause of open science through collective learning and collaboration.


Parallel session 5: Working towards co-writing an article on best practices in the teaching of research ethics and research integrity

We perceive a lacuna of information on best practices in the teaching of research ethics and related subjects. Therefore, our suggested plan is to utilize September to Athens as a runway to produce an article on such best practices. You are all cordially invited as co-authors.

This is an opportunity to share best practices, network and do academic work together outside our regular meetings.
